EVIAN, France (VGMG) — The Group of Seven summit in Evian, France concluded on Wednesday without issuing a traditional joint communique, marking the second consecutive year that the bloc failed to produce a unified statement from all seven leaders.
The three-day summit produced nine separate documents addressing specific topics, including cancer cooperation, disease prevention, and illegal migration. The decision to abandon a unified communique came during preparations, according to diplomatic sources cited by Kyodo News, in an effort to avoid highlighting deep divisions among members.
French President Emmanuel Macron said on Wednesday that the group reached agreements on the Ukraine conflict, Middle East tensions, global economic imbalances, and critical minerals. However, he openly acknowledged that the United States and the other six nations held fundamentally different positions on climate policy and the United Nations multilateral system.
“The G7 has achieved a series of consensus on the Ukraine crisis, the Middle East situation, addressing global economic imbalances, and critical minerals,” Macron said at a post-summit press conference. “At the same time, the United States and the other six G7 countries have different stances on climate issues and the UN multilateral system.”
The summit revealed deep rifts among member nations on trade policy, approach to China, and military support for Ukraine. The United States and Japan pushed for stronger language on security issues, while European nations emphasized the importance of managing economic ties with Beijing.
The gathering brought together leaders from the United States, United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, Canada, and Japan. France served as the rotating chair of the summit.
Outside the conference venue, protests drew thousands of demonstrators who criticized the bloc as a closed elite club. Meanwhile, the organizers invited emerging economies including India, South Korea, Brazil, and Kenya to participate in select outreach sessions, signaling an attempt to broaden the G7’s global footprint.
In a move reflecting Europe’s growing urgency for a diplomatic off-ramp, Italy’s Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni called on the European Union to appoint a special envoy for contacts with Russia regarding the Ukraine conflict, underscoring the shifting dynamics within the Western alliance.
