MADRID, Aug. 13 — A total solar eclipse swept across northern Spain and a sliver of northwestern Portugal on Wednesday evening, drawing crowds of residents, tourists, and astronomy enthusiasts to viewing events organized across both countries in one of the most significant astronomical events visible from Europe this decade — and the first total solar eclipse over mainland Europe since 1999.
The Path of Totality The Moon’s shadow made landfall on the Iberian Peninsula shortly after 8:30 p.m. local time, first grazing Portugal’s northwestern tip before racing southeastward across Spain’s northern regions — including Galicia, Castile and León, the Basque Country, Aragón and the Balearic Islands — and exiting over the Mediterranean as the Sun sank toward the horizon. Totality reached a global maximum of 2 minutes 18 seconds over the North Atlantic near Iceland; on Spanish soil, the fully eclipsed Sun lingered for 76 seconds in Galicia and up to about 96 seconds in the Balearics. Partial phases were visible across much of Western and Central Europe, from the British Isles to Poland and as far south as Morocco.
Public Response and Logistics Spanish authorities declared a special operational status in six autonomous communities along the path of totality, deploying additional emergency services and traffic management units. Authorities had projected that up to 6 million visitors would converge on the path of totality, and cities along it — including Santiago de Compostela, where totality lasted more than a minute against a dramatic sunset sky — reported accommodation capacity overwhelmed weeks in advance. Portuguese officials reported similar influxes in the northern border region. Both countries’ meteorological agencies had issued favorable weather forecasts, with mostly clear skies along much of the path, though some coastal areas experienced patchy cloud cover.
Scientific Opportunity The eclipse provided researchers with a rare opportunity to study the Sun’s corona — the star’s outer atmosphere, which is normally obscured by its brightness. Multiple scientific expeditions from European and American institutions positioned themselves along the path to conduct observations of coronal mass ejections, solar wind dynamics, and the corona’s magnetic field structure.
Economic Impact The event delivered a major boost to the two host countries’ tourism sectors, according to preliminary industry assessments. Hotels along the path reported full occupancy weeks in advance, while airlines added extra flights to northern Spanish cities. The eclipse also highlighted Europe’s growing astrotourism sector, with specialized travel companies reporting record bookings for future celestial events, including the next total solar eclipse visible from Europe, projected for August 2027.
