KATHMANDU, Aug. 28 — A collapsed glacier is the likely cause of the devastating floods and landslides that struck the Nepal-Tibet border region on Wednesday, according to preliminary findings by scientists, as the confirmed death toll climbed toward 400 with more than 1,400 people still reported missing.
Emergency teams are racing to reach affected zones along the Bhote Koshi River, where entire villages and communities have been washed out, according to the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC). Nepali soldiers are using sniffer dogs to search for bodies amid difficult terrain and continuing rainfall.
The disaster highlights the accelerating melt of Himalayan ice. Scientists who reviewed early satellite data said the flood pattern was consistent with a glacial lake outburst or massive glacier collapse, a phenomenon linked to rising regional temperatures and permafrost degradation.
The flash floods struck communities on both the Nepali and Tibetan sides of the border, destroying homes, bridges and roads. Rescue operations have been severely complicated by landslides that cut off access routes, forcing teams to travel on foot or by helicopter. Authorities have noted that the missing include dozens of foreign trekkers who were exploring the popular high-altitude routes.
The IFRC has mobilized local volunteers and is coordinating with Nepali authorities to deliver shelter, clean water and medical supplies. International aid offers have begun to arrive as authorities assess the scale of the damage.
Officials caution that casualty figures may continue to rise as rescue teams reach more remote settlements. The disaster has renewed urgent global attention on the extreme vulnerability of Himalayan communities to climate-driven hazards.
