New York, January 12, 2020 — As the new year begins, Times Square, the iconic landmark in Midtown Manhattan, New York, continues to hold its title as one of the world’s busiest commercial districts. Hundreds of thousands of visitors stream through the neon-lit streets daily, with a diverse range of businesses and cultural IPs breathing life into this “Crossroads of the World.”

In January, the giant digital billboards and outdoor advertisements in Times Square continue to stage a “visual feast” of global brands and cultural content. As seen in the image, the teaser poster for DC’s superhero film Wonder Woman 1984 occupies a prime advertising spot, drawing the attention of movie fans worldwide. Meanwhile, a matrix of ads for consumer brands like vitaminwater zero, retail giants such as T.J. Maxx, and commercial real estate players including RXR, forms the iconic commercial landscape that defines Times Square. According to data from NYC & Company, New York City’s official tourism organization, in the first two weeks of January 2020, Times Square recorded an average daily foot traffic of over 500,000, a 3.2% increase compared to the same period in 2019. International tourists accounted for 42% of the total, with visitor numbers from source markets including China, Brazil, and the United Kingdom continuing to climb.

As New York City’s calling card, Times Square’s vitality extends far beyond commercial foot traffic, serving as a dual hub for cultural dissemination and urban economic growth. Broadway theaters, themed restaurants, and immersive experience venues in the district continue to attract global visitors, with Broadway box office revenue exceeding $45 million in the first week of January 2020, hitting a record high for the month of January in history. Simultaneously, Times Square’s outdoor advertising market maintains strong growth: the sector generated over $680 million in annual revenue in 2019, and multiple brands signed year-long digital billboard contracts at the start of 2020, further solidifying its position as a world-class top-tier advertising display platform.

A spokesperson for the New York City Economic Development Corporation stated that in 2020, New York City will continue to advance the upgrading and renovation of Times Square, including optimizing the pedestrian street environment, upgrading digital billboard technology, and introducing more cultural and artistic events, to further enhance the district’s global appeal. For visitors, Times Square is not only a must-visit spot when checking off New York City, but also a window to experience global trends in business, culture, and entertainment. The bustling scene at the start of the new year also gets New York City’s tourism and economic development off to a strong start in 2020.
