Towngas North Point Headquarters Showcases Scalable, Zero-Carbon Energy Solution for Dense Cities
HONG KONG, May 18, 2026 – The Hong Kong and China Gas Company Limited (Towngas) today announced a landmark step in Hong Kong’s sustainable energy transition with the launch of the city’s first hydrogen-powered electric vehicle (EV) charging station at a commercial building. Located at the company’s North Point headquarters, the pioneering facility operates entirely off-grid using locally sourced, bottled hydrogen, presenting a viable model for expanding clean transport infrastructure without straining the city’s power network.
This first-of-its-kind station addresses a critical urban challenge: how to rapidly deploy high-power EV charging in areas with limited electrical grid capacity. By generating electricity on-site through a hydrogen fuel cell, the solution bypasses the need for costly and carbon-intensive grid upgrades.
The station’s operation is built on a fully localized, closed-loop model. The hydrogen is sourced and produced in Hong Kong. The initial supply is extracted from Towngas’s existing network, with a definitive roadmap to transition to 100% green hydrogen produced from biogas at the Tseung Kwan O landfill, transforming organic waste into clean fuel. The gas is transported via high-pressure cylinders and fed into a stationary fuel cell system in the building’s car park. The fuel cell generates electricity through a chemical reaction between hydrogen and oxygen, producing only pure water and heat as by-products. This electricity directly powers the EV chargers.
“Today, we are not just launching a charging station; we are proving a new paradigm for urban energy,” said Mr. Peter Wong, Managing Director of Towngas. “This project turns two challenges—organic waste and grid constraints—into one elegant solution for zero-carbon transport. It’s a live blueprint that can be replicated across Hong Kong and other metropolitan areas, accelerating our path to net-zero without overloading our existing infrastructure.”
The system has a rated power output of 25 kW, generating enough electricity for approximately 15 kWh per kilogram of hydrogen—providing about 100 km of range for a typical EV. Operating independently from the grid, it is projected to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 40 tonnes annually.
