SUZHOU, China, May 22, 2026 — The 2026 APEC Ministers Responsible for Trade Meeting opened today in Suzhou, Jiangsu Province, gathering trade policymakers from 21 member economies to advance regional integration and shape the global economic agenda ahead of November’s Leaders’ Meeting.
Under China’s 2026 APEC theme “Building an Asia-Pacific Community to Prosper Together,” the two-day ministerial centers on three strategic pillars: Openness, Innovation, and Cooperation.

Openness: Defending Multilateralism

Ministers are reviewing progress on the Free Trade Area of the Asia-Pacific (FTAAP) and reaffirming support for a rules-based WTO system. With global trade fragmentation risks rising, APEC economies are pushing back against protectionism and advocating for seamless regional supply chains. The meeting underscores that open markets—not barriers—are essential for post-pandemic recovery and long-term resilience.

Innovation: Digital and Green Transition

The agenda prioritizes digital trade facilitation, AI governance frameworks, and green industrial cooperation. APEC members are advancing cross-border data flow protocols and exploring common standards for low-carbon supply chains. These efforts reflect a regional shift toward “innovation-driven growth,” where technology and sustainability jointly unlock new economic opportunities.

Cooperation: Inclusive Growth

From SME capacity-building to electronic customs interoperability, ministers are endorsing practical measures to ensure smaller economies and micro-enterprises share in regional gains. Enhanced connectivity under the APEC Blueprint aims to reduce trade costs, strengthen supply chain resilience, and broaden access to digital markets.
This year marks the 35th anniversary of China’s accession to APEC. As host, China emphasizes that “open regionalism” remains the most viable path to shared prosperity amid geopolitical uncertainty. Suzhou—a city blending cultural heritage with cutting-edge industry—hosts this year’s ministerial as part of a nationwide series of APEC events culminating in the Leaders’ Meeting in Shenzhen this November.
Global observers note that APEC’s consensus-driven model offers a critical platform for balancing national interests with collective action. With the bloc accounting for nearly 40% of world trade and over 60% of global GDP, outcomes from Suzhou are poised to influence multilateral trade reform, climate-commerce linkages, and digital governance frameworks well beyond the Pacific rim.
In an era of volatility, the message from Suzhou is clear: openness, innovation, and cooperation are not just regional priorities—they are the foundation for global economic stability.
