HAMBURG, Germany — A domestically developed supercomputer from China has claimed the top position on the latest edition of the Global Top500 list, marking the country’s return to the summit of worldwide high-performance computing after a nine-year gap. The Lingsheng (LineShine) system achieved a sustained double-precision floating-point performance of 2.19 exaflops, making it the world’s first system to surpass the 2-exaflop threshold on the High Performance Linpack (HPL) benchmark.
The rankings were released at the International Supercomputing Conference (ISC) 2026 held in Hamburg, Germany. The Lingsheng system is operated by the National Supercomputing Center in Shenzhen and employs a hybrid intelligent fusion architecture, according to data presented at the conference.
The system runs on domestically developed LX2 processors, each containing 304 cores operating at 1.55 gigahertz, connected through the LingQi interconnect network. The total core count reaches approximately 13.79 million. The system operates using the Kylin operating system, according to the Top500 listing.
In addition to the HPL benchmark, Lingsheng also secured first place on the HPCG (High-Performance Conjugate Gradient) benchmark and ranked fourth on the HPL-MxP mixed-precision benchmark. The system’s power consumption stands at approximately 42.2 megawatts, with an energy efficiency rating of 52.07 gigaflops per watt, placing it at 50th on the GREEN500 energy efficiency ranking.
Since its deployment, the system has supported applications across multiple domains, including atmospheric and ocean simulation, engineering simulation, materials science, drug discovery, brain science, scientific AI, and large language model inference, the conference materials stated.
China previously led the Top500 list prior to 2017. The United States and Japan have also hosted systems that previously held the top position in recent years.
